Congratulations for French Open tennis champions Rafael Nadal and Francesca Schiavone
Speaking in her capacity as European Commissioner responsible for sport, Androulla Vassiliou has paid tribute to Spain's Rafael Nadal, following his straight sets victory in the French Open at Roland Garros.
"I would like to congratulate Rafael Nadal for his fifth French Open title and for reclaiming his number one world ranking," she said.
The Commissioner also paid tribute to the "wonderful play" of his opponent, Sweden's Robin Soderling.
She also highlighted Francesca Schiavone's victory over Australian favourite Samantha Stosur in the women's singles - the first Grand Slam win by an Italian woman. "It was really wonderful," said the Commissioner.
Her comments came during a press conference in Brussels on 7 June.
