CONSUMER POLICY

New EU rules grant consumers better protection across the single market

26/08/2014

In June 2013, new consumer rights rules entered into force across the EU Member States, thus ensuring better protection for citizens in the digital age.

The new rules give Europeans the opportunity to return a product they bought online within 14 days of its purchase and get their money back after up to 14 days. People also have the right to give up a contract maximum two weeks after they signed it. Thanks to the new rules, people are no longer faced with pre-ticked boxes when buying plane tickets online.

A full list of the benefits which the new rules bring to consumers is available here.

If people notice that retailers do not respect all or some of these rights, they are advised to immediately contact the consumer protection authority in their country .
