The European Union delivers as global ocean leader with €7 billion in pledges

On 5-6 October 2017 the European Union hosted the Our Ocean Conference in my home country, Malta. Our aim was to match the €5 billion in commitments secured at the 2016 edition, held in Washington D.C. In fact, we overshot this target by a full forty percent with over €7 billion in commitments made. Participants also announced the creation of new marine protected areas spanning more than 2.5 million km², or more than half the size of the entire European Union.

Malta returns to the global stage on ocean protection

50 years ago, Malta stood proudly on the global stage on Ocean protection. At the United Nations in 1967, Malta's own Arvid Pardo became known as the 'father of the law of the sea conference'. This conference, and Pardo's work, set in place the laws that still govern our planet's seas and oceans.

WWF new Mediterranean report launched, foreword from Commissioner Karmenu VELLA

The Mediterranean Sea is deeply embedded in the cultures, livelihoods and social structure of the nations that surround it. Some of my earliest memories growing up in Malta are of the central role the Mediterranean Sea played for our family and society. Developing the blue economy of the Mediterranean has often been seen as a frontier with infinite possibilities to resolve many of the challenges and improve livelihoods of Mediterranean communities.

An Ambitious Action Plan for Nature, People and the Economy

Protecting nature has always been a hot button issue for EU citizens. So it came as no surprise, when I was asked to review the state of EU nature legislation, to see the massive engagement from all over Europe. More than 500,000 people, the second highest turnout in the EU, replied to the Fitness Check consultation, with an enormous majority supporting the existing framework.

#OurOcean 2017: An Ocean for Life

If you are reading this, it means you are in the air, returning to or coming from Malta. It also means you are most likely flying above the beautiful Mediterranean, Malta's own sea.

Informal Council of the Environment Ministers in Tallinn

What are your main expectations regarding the informal meeting of environment ministers? From the Environment point of view, it's great to see the Estonia making eco-innovation a priority. And best of all, it's a file that that will be to the fore for the next 18 months, as it's been adopted as a priority by the next three Member States that will hold the Council presidency.

'European perspectives on a changing arctic"

This European Environment Agency (EEA) report contributes to the growing international discourse on the Arctic region. It is both timely and important, since it examines the increasingly rapid changes that are taking place in the Arctic from a European perspective. It considers the national, regional and global challenges and opportunities that are emerging as a result.

    Working for a greener future

What do an architect, a plumber, a banker, a water engineer and an organic wine grower have in common? Not much, you might think. Well, actually they do: in one way or another, they are all making the circular economy happen.

    Naħdmu għal futur aktar Ekoloġiku

X'hemm komuni bejn perit, plamer, bankier, inġinier tal-ilma u kultivatur tal-inbid organiku?

Twilight for the trade in tusks

Almost exactly a year ago I was in Kenya, looking at the remains of an enormous pile of ivory. The ashes of 105 tonnes of ivory in fact, a stockpile sent up in smoke by the authorities in Nairobi. Rather than seeing it fuel the murderous trade that is killing elephants and the rangers who protect them all across the African continent, they decided, quite simply, to burn it.
