Ensuring that ODS are replaced with climate-friendly alternatives is one of our main aims when phasing out ODS. The EU legislation has not only been very effective in controlling ozone-depleting substances but has also acted as a driver for the development of innovative technologies.
The EU is at the forefront of developing and implementing alternatives to the substances which are gradually being phased out for specific uses, goods, and processes. These include alternatives to methyl bromide, new blowing agents for insulation foam, CFC-free metered dose inhalers for the treatment of asthma, and the creation of innovative non-halon fire-fighting systems, for example on ships and airplanes.
The EU has organised workshops and produced reports and studies to promote available alternatives both domestically and internationally. See the documentation tab.
