The European Parliament today approved the first-ever EU-wide CO2 emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles. The new rules set targets for reducing the average emissions from new lorries for 2025 and 2030.
The Council of Ministers today agreed on CO2 emission standards for new cars and vans in the EU for the period after 2020. In 2030, emissions from new cars will have to be 37.5% lower and emissions from new vans 31% lower, compared to 2021.

The EU fleet average of CO2 emissions of new vehicles in 2017 stayed well below the applicable target, according to final data published by the European Environment Agency. However, for the first time, average CO2 emissions from new passenger cars were slightly higher than in the previous year. For vans, the decreasing trend continued.
