Save water

Use water responsibly. Only 2.5% of water on the Earth is fresh water. Of this, over two‑thirds is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps.

Use water responsibly!
  • Check your toilet for leaks. A leaking toilet can waste 200 litres of water per day − the same as flushing it 50 times.
  • If a tap drips, fix it. Otherwise you might waste up to 1 litre of water per hour, the equivalent of an entire bathtub in 1 week.
  • Water your garden in the late evening or early morning, when less water is lost through evaporation.
  • Let your lawn grow longer, which requires less water. Taller grass encourages deeper roots and shades the soil to reduce moisture loss.
  • Use a thermos flask. When you boil water for a hot drink, boil only what you need, or pour the surplus into a thermos flask to keep the water hot for your next cup.
  • Take a shower instead of a bath. This uses up to 4 times less energy. To maximise the energy savings, use a low-flow showerhead.
  • Have your water boiler inspected once a year to check it is not consuming too much energy. Replace it every 15 years. New boilers use less energy.
