About the Health Programme

What is the Health Programme?

The EU Health Programme is a funding programme created to implement the EU health strategy.

Chafea is the Executive Agency entrusted by the European Commission with the management of the Health Programme. Chafea implements the Programme by means of annual work plans, where priority areas, criteria and actions to be implemented, are decided by the Directorate General for Health etc. and adopted by the European Commission.

The 3rd Health Programme has a budget of € 449.4 million.

The 4 main objectives

Promote health, prevent diseases and foster supportive environments for healthy lifestyles according to the 'health in all policies' principle

Protect Union citizens from serious cross-border health threats

Contribute to innovative, efficient and sustainable health systems

Facilitate access to better and safer healthcare for EU citizens

The current programme was preceded by the 1st HP (2003-2008) and the 2nd HP (2008-2013).
