Driving small and medium municipalities in Europe towards integrating into the Single Digital Gateway

eID eArchiving Blockchain CoreVocs
DCAT Profile CPSV EU Survey

Open Content in a nutshell

We designed and implemented an Open Source eGovernment platform with a twofold mission: offering local authorities a concrete and simple solution to manage the digital transformation process that they must face in order to offer modern digital services to citizens and businesses, in full compliance with digital legislation (national and European) and offering practical methodologies to extract the maximum value from the data that local authorities already have, which can be used for data-driven communication or to design new mobile-first services, requesting data from citizens once-only.

With pervasive process automation and more conscious data management, public officials can focus more on data monitoring and data observability, using the platform's dashboards or integrating it with external business intelligence systems via API; this helps to progressively improve the quality of the services offered to citizens. OpenCity is compliant with some European Commission reusable solutions (Core Vocabularies, CPSV-AP, DCAT-AP, eID). It consists of independent but interoperable micro-services, which are provided “as a Service” (SaaS) and can be activated according to priorities and needs of the different organizations.

Why did you participate to the challenge

We believe that the spread of homogeneous public digital services in the European context can only take place through the reuse of standardized, open and shared solutions; for this purpose, we designed OpenCity, a cloud-oriented solution that allows local authorities (e.g. municipalities and regions) to quickly implement new digital services aligned with European standards and the technical guidelines provided by local digital agendas, without requiring special technical knowledge.

Encouraged by the very positive feedback that OpenCity achieved at a national level, our goal is to quickly turn it into a cross-border solution for small and medium municipalities (up to about 300,000 inhabitants). The progressive integration also with the most innovative solutions available for reuse (such as blockchain) will give local authorities and citizens greater guarantees on the process and data management, and our "zero-knowledge proof" solution will be more competitive on the European market.

Orangebooks in a nutshell

Our vision at orangebooks is to eliminate entry barriers when running a business. It's expected that by 2030 70% of European workforce will be self-employed or running a business.

We are building AI-bookkeeper to help entrepreneurs focus on growing their businesses instead of wasting hundreds of hours on manual paper work or hiring an expensive professional. We are creating a completely new type of service based on open reusable solutions and open banking APIs.

Why did you participate in the challenge?

Our mission is to enable European citizens and residents to run businesses without worrying about entry barriers such as bookkeeping and navigating through taxation rules.

Moreover, as our service becomes accessible in every EU country, our technology can increase freedom of movement for citizens who are self-employed or running a micro-business. This will create a more inclusive environment, helping many without any financial background, in the early stages of their entrepreneurial journey.

We decided to participate in the Digital Innovation Challenge to showcase orangebooks AI-bookkeeper to experts at European Commission and prove that new regulations (such as PSD2) together with open reusable solutions (such as eInvoicing) can create a new type of services that can have a significant impact on economic growth as entrepreneurs and micro-businesses are the main driver of the European economy.

T-mining - Secure Container Release

Strengthen control of the imported goods and fight drugs, crime and violence through blockchain

Blockchain eID

T-mining in a nutshell

At T-Mining we are using blockchain technology to secure the release of import containers at the European deepsea ports. This process is currently still prone to errors and security loopholes. A recent report by Europol identified weak security of the release information (the PIN-codes) as one of the main loopholes used by organized crime to smuggle cocaïne into Europe.

With our Secure Container Release solution we secure this release process by connecting all relevant parties - the ship operators, the port operators, the transport companies and the authorities - onto one secure blockchain network. This allows them to exchange the relevant information quickly and securely, while maintaining commercial privacy, and keeping an immutable ledger of container moves that can be used by the criminal police for investigations.

Why did you participate in the challenge?

Drugs import and maritime security are European problems. Improving the security in one European port, simply moves the drugs import traffic to another port. So we feel strongly that rolling out our solution at EU level would be the best guarantee for reducing the import of drugs into Europe.

Secondly, our solution supports a close involvement and data exchange with the port authorities - customs, food safety agency, criminal police, … - so connecting our Secure Container Release to the European Blockchain Service Infrastructure feels like the best way to gain wide adoption with then different industry players, ports and authorities in Europe.

“Connecting our Secure Container Release to the EBSI feels like the best way to gain wide adoption with different industry players, ports and authorities in Europe.”
