The SLIM project is based on collaboration between three NUTS3 regions – Värmland, Dalarna and Gävleborg – and focuses on capacity building, learning processes and development of new methods and tools for regional growth through innovative platforms and cluster organisations. The clusters cover everything from IT and services sectors to traditional industries. The projects involves four universities that are home to 55 000 students and 3 000 researchers.The SLIM project underwent three phases. In SLIM I and SLIM II, partners were brought together and results were assessed to see how they could be used and disseminated. SLIM III makes use of the knowledge acquired in the project and transfers it to others, creating more innovation capacity for the participating regions. For example, Region Dalarna has formed a team with the university, regional incubator, the County Administrative Board and other strategic partners. The team aims to involve the clusters in the regional development work and strengthen the regional innovation system for the region's industrial clusters and creative industry. The Triple Steelix cluster has increased exchange of metallurgical knowledge between the university, SMEs and large companies.SLIM's growth model has been cited as a best practice case for developing innovation strategies by Sweden's government and the OECD.
