Operation FAKE, the surveillance of maritime and air traffic from 17 to 27 May 2005, was the result of close cooperation between the Customs authorities of the 25 Member States, the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) and the Taxation and Customs Union Directorate-General (DG TAXUD). The goal of the operation was to analyse the routes used by counterfeiters to gain access to Europe.

The objectives of the operation, aside from being able to gain a greater familiarity with the routes used in the transportation of the fake goods, were two-fold:
Firstly that of improving cooperation and information exchange between the customs services of the Member States, necessitating the setting up of a risk analysis network within OLAF at operational level.
Secondly that of identifying, through the seizing of illegal goods, the principal routes used, as well as the dismantling of the international criminal organisations responsible.
The route chosen was China to Europe via Africa, via South America and via Malaysia and the Middle East.
