Legislative proposal for a reviewed legislation on organic farming

On 24 March 2014 the European Commission adopted the legislative proposals for a new Regulation on organic production and labelling of organic products.

It aims at adjusting the EU legislation to the current situation in the EU organic market, which has quadrupled in size over the last 10 years. The adjustment is necessary so that the sector can further develop and respond to future challenges. The Commission's proposal seeks to address shortcomings of the current system putting both producers' and consumers' concerns at the heart of the new proposals.

The legislative proposals are accompanied by an impact assessment that evaluates alternative scenarios for the evolution of the policy.

The Commission has also adopted an Action Plan on the future of Organic Production in Europe to help organic farmers, producers and retailers adjust to the new policy and meet future challenges.
