Project environment

Estonian National Museum is located in Southern Estonia, in the second largest city of Estonia - Tartu. With a population a little under 100 000, Tartu is the oldest university city and the cradle of Estonian culture.

The volunteer would be working in the town-centrer, in Estonian National Museum's Exhibition House. Volunteer would be able to meet a lot of people from different parts of Estonia and abroad. Museum staff will be supproting volunteer in adapting to the environment. ENM offers the volunteer perfect conditions for getting to know Estonian and Finno-Ugric cultures.

The volunteer would get valuable insights into the working of a modern cultural institution. Taking part in museum's activities will give a whole range of new experiences and knowledge. Aside from helping and observing the work of the DEME the volunteer would also be able to participate in everyday activities of other departments.

Activities the volunteer would be observing and if possible, participating in:
- helping in the planning and building up of temporary exhibitions
- participating in organising our annual documentary film festival Wordlfilm
- helping in carrying out concerts and family events
- assisting in the work of our guides and museum pedagogues, working directy with young people and advising older in the case of handycraft worshops
- sometimes help in translating or creating information materals (both virtual, multimedia solutions and printed materials) could be needed.

Any innovative propositions from the part of the volunteer are welcome and will be seriously considered!

The volunteer should be interested in culture and history. Experiences in participating/organising events in cultural sphere, good knowledge of english, positive attitude, independent nature and creative thinking will be an advantage during the selection process.

Estonian National Museum can provide possible accommodation addresses for the volunteer which are located near the museum in the town centre.
Staff of the museum will meet the volunteer at the beginning of the stay and all the possible situations and tasks will be discussed. Expectations from both sides are cleared. A support person is offered from the behalf of the museum.

ENM would prefer the volunteer be older than 18 years of age.

Motivation and EVS experience

Estonian National Museum (in short ENM) has not previously participated in EVS projects. Still, the museum has had ample experiences in receiving volunteers both on national and international level, for example in the framework of Leonardo project. ENM also hosts students from different universities in Estonia doing their praxis in our museum, in fields as diverse as public relations and wood conservation.
The museum, located in the city of Tartu, has five departments: the Department of Research, the Department of Collections, the Department of Preservation and Conservation, the Administrative Department and the Department of Exhibitions and Museum Education.
At first ENM would like to include volunteers in the everyday activities of the Department of Exhibitions and Museum Education (in short DEME) . DEME is the part of the museum that is in constant dialogue with society through organising and housing various events, concerts, exhibitions and conferences aimed at different age and interest groups. The volunteer would be able to get an insight into the functioning of a big institution which is active in the field of culture and be able to participate in various stages of organising events and communicating with different peole from all over the world. ENM is interested in receiving volunteers as they bring new breathing - i.e. new ideas, new ways of thinking & new strategies of organising to the host organisation.

Description of the organisation

Founded in 1909, ENM is an established organisation that has been active in preserving, collecting, researching and popularising the culture of peoples who have lived and are living in Estonia as well the cultures of other Finno-Ugric nations. ENM is a cultural history museum; our goal is helping in keeping the cultural continuity of Estonian society.

The Deparment of Exhibitions and Museum Education organises exhibitions & programmes introducing Estonian folk and contemporary culture, also family events, handycraft workshops and courses, anthropological and documentary film events in the framework of Worldfilm Festival, concerts and conferences on a regular basis. As the activities are varied, so are the target groups - from pre-shool children to university students, adults with different interest focus to retired people.

Staff of this department consists of programme coordinators, designers, guides, museum pedagogs and support staff, less than 20 people. All in all, Estonian National Museum has a staff of 100 employees.
