Category 4 : Entrepreneurial Spirit
Description: The Time Savings Bank aims to encourage young people to participate in activities that are of value to the development of their local community by creating a system of non-cash but material rewards for the work they conduct. The project focused on municipalities with few socio-cultural and economical opportunities. Up to 45 young people took part and carried out activities ranging from minor gardening and bricklaying to cleaning community facilities, collaborating in community events and assisting children and the elderly. They were given one credit for each hour of work that was carried out to a standard verified by a zone co-ordinator. This materialised in a “cheque” that could be exchanged during the duration of the programme for a range of material goods and services requested by them.
Results: The project fights against social exclusion by encouraging youth to actively participate in the development of their own communities. It developed the youth’s interest in the condition of the places they inhabited. It also supported their personal development instilling a sense of responsibility for the outcome and for completing tasks they set. Because they carried out tasks in their own community the work they did was respected and supported by the local community in a different way than if it were done by outsiders.
