Young people with fewer opportunities and volunteering
Strasbourg, December 11-12 2006
In the framework of the Youth Partnership the European Commission and the Council of Europe organised an expert seminar on the volunteering of young people with fewer opportunities on 11-12 December 2006. The aim of the seminar was to exchange good practices and experiences and to define recommendations to policy-makers, administrators and practitioners how to enhance voluntary activities of young people.
For young people with fewer opportunitie (1) voluntary activities can be of particular importance as they might offer a bridge to employment, re-establish self-esteem, ensure the recognition of acquired skills and competences via volunteering and allow for a successful insertion into society.
The basis for this seminar was the Resolution of the Council of Youth Ministers on common objectives for voluntary activities of young people. In this Resolution Youth Ministers agreed to, "Analyse more carefully the phenomena that lead to the exclusion of certain groups of young people from voluntary activities and develop approaches focused on encouraging them to participate in voluntary activities, particularly for young people with fewer opportunities."
(1) No definition of young people with fewer opportunities was used in order to allow the largest possible application to different situations of young people in different Member States.
