Summary of Treaty

Official Title Terms of reference of the International Tin Study Group
Type of Agreement Multilateral
Place of Signature New York
Date of Signature 07/04/1989
Date of Entry Into Force Pending
Objective of Agreement To ensure enhanced international cooperation on issues concerning tin, by improving the information available on the international tin economy and by providing a forum for intergovernmental consultations on tin.
Remarks The International Tin Agreement (ITA) was one of the oldest commodity pacts. The first ITA after WWII had been negotiated in 1954 setting up the International Tin Council to manage the agreement. It was followed by other agreements ('60, '65, '70, '75, '80). After the collapse of the London tin market in 1985 the ITC decided not to negotiate the 7th ITA. A UN conference under the auspices of UNCTAD had been convened in 1988-89 to create new regulatory scheme for trade in tin, reflecting equally the interest of tin exporters. As the result of the conference, the Terms of Reference of the International Rubber Study Group were draw up. The Terms of Reference has not yet entered into force pending the acceptance of it by some of the major tin exporters and importers (see entry into force conditions, Article 21 of the agreement).
