|Official Title||Protocol relating to the Madrid Agreement concerning the international registration of marks, adopted at Madrid on 27 June 1989|
|Type of Agreement||Multilateral|
|Place of Signature||Madrid|
|Date of Signature||27/06/1989|
|Date of Entry Into Force||01/12/1995|
|Objective of Agreement||The objective of the Madrid Protocol is to render the mark registration system, set up by the Madrid Agreement, more flexible, so that other countries could accede to the system as well.|
|Remarks||The system of international registration of marks is principally governed by the Madrid Agreement, concluded in 1891 and revised at Brussels (1900), Washington (1911), The Hague (1925), London (1934), Nice (1957), and Stockholm (1967), and amended in 1979, and the present “Madrid Protocol” relating to that Agreement, which was concluded in 1989, with the aim of rendering the Madrid system more flexible and more compatible with the domestic legislation of certain countries which had not been able to accede to the original Agreement.
The system makes it possible to protect a mark in a large number of countries by obtaining an international registration which has effect in each of the Contracting Parties that has been designated.
