The purpose of the agreement is to improve the conditions for the marketing of spirit drinks through mutual recognition and the protection of designations under which spirits are marketed in the Community and Mexico in accordance with the principles of equality, mutual benefit and reciprocity.
Under the agreement both parties agreed to protect the denominations of origin of certain spirits.
The agreement provides protection to more than 250 European GIs, among them being Scotch Whisky, Irish Whiskey, Rum de Madeira, Rhum de la Martinique, Ron de Malaga, Kornbrand, Armagnac, Cognac, Brandy de Jerez, Grappa, Kirsch, Calvados, Ouzo, Irish Cream, Cassis de Dijon, Swedish Punch, Swedish Vodka and Finsk Vodka.
Two Mexican appellations of origin are similarly protected: Tequila and Mezcal.
