The European Commission has launched a competition to support and recognise
journalists who have through their work increased awareness and a broader
understanding of poverty and social exclusion. It is one of the key EU-level
activities during the 2010 European Year for
combating poverty and social exclusion and will help raise public awareness
of the surrounding issues.
The competition is open to print, online and audiovisual journalists.
The articles and audiovisual reports should be published or aired by a
media outlet between 1 October 2009 and 31 August 2010 within the 27 member
states or in Iceland and Norway.
The deadline for applications is 31 August 2010.
All entries will first be judged by a jury of national experts and compete
for the national prize of 800 euro (715 GBP). National winners will then
be put forward for the overall European competition where the most original and
newsworthy reports from across the EU will contest for the top prizes of 4,500
euro, 3,000 euro and 2,000 euro (GBP 4,020, GBP 2,680 and GBP 1,787).
The competition will culminate with a prize giving ceremony hosted by the
Belgian Presidency in Brussels on 17 December 2010.
