UK's National Centre for Languages wins gold at European learning awards

CILT, the National Centre for Languages has been honoured with a gold prize at the European Awards for Lifelong Learning announced today in Ljubljana, Slovenia. CILT and its European project partners took the award in the Languages category, showcasing projects funded by the European Commission that develop and disseminate high quality materials for language learning. CILT was selected for its Lingu@net Europa Plus project, which provides online learning resources, advice and motivational support to teach languages and prepare British citizens for time spent in another European country as part of their education or training.

Reijo Kemppinen, Head of the European Commission's office in the UK said "This award shows how the stereotype about the British being bad at languages is totally out-of-date – Britain is up among the European leaders in the teaching of foreign languages. Schools, universities and employers are all seeing the value of investing in language training. I congratulate CILT on their award and wish them and their students all the best for the future."

Geoff Swinn, Acting Chief Executive of CILT said: ‘We are delighted to have been involved in this project. Lingu@net Europa is a fantastic example of European collaboration and all partners involved have benefited from the exchange of expertise and insight.’

There was also a British partner in the project that won gold in the vocational training category, where the Danish company "Falck" has been working with the Shropshire Fire Service to improve its training in rescue and safety. Other categories honoured were: school education; higher education; and adult learning.
