Secondary schools can now register their pupils to enter the EU's annual Juvenes Translatores competition at ec.europa.eu/translatores. The contest, now in its seventh year, is open to pupils born in 1996 and will take place on 28 November when pupils from across Europe will translate a one-page text from any of the EU's 24 official languages into another EU official language.

All the entries will be marked by European Commission translators and one winning translation selected per country. The prize for the winning translators will be a trip to Brussels to receive their awards in April 2014.

Last year's UK winner, Angus Russell from the City of London School, had this to say about the experience:

"It was really interesting to meet people from around Europe and discuss their own experiences of translation, especially as some of winners had translated rather more exotic combinations of languages than English and German! Not only did I greatly enjoy the ceremony itself, but the opportunity to see translators at work at the European Commission was very insightful. It has certainly got me thinking about a career either in translation or in the European Institutions."
