The European Commission is launching today an online platform for free-to-use open educational resources. The platform – Open Education Europa is part of a major initiative to boost innovation and digital skills in schools and universities across Europe. It provides access to online learning possibilities, such as Massive Open Online Courses (or MOOCs), produced in Europe in their original language.

It also enables universities and research and educational institutions to publicise their courses. Currently, some 200 institutions across Europe- among them the universities of Surrey, Sussex, Sheffield, Leicester, Edinburg, the Leeds Metropolitan University and the University of the Arts London -   participate. The content is constantly updated.

Today's initiative – Opening up Education – looks in three main areas:

    • creating opportunities for teachers, learners and organisations to innovate.
    • increasing the use of Open Educational Resources and ensuring that educational materials produced with public funding are available to all.
    • better ICT infrastructure and connectivity in schools.

Over the next 10 years, the e-Learning market is projected by some to grow fifteen-fold and account for 30% of the whole education market. Today's initiative aims to help professionals in education and policy makers to shape this transformation rather than endure it as something that happens to them.
