EU High Representative Javier Solana today named Mr Gilles de Kerchove as the EU's new Counterterrorism Coordinator, replacing Gijs de Vries, who had assumed the just-created position following the Madrid train bombings in 2004. Mr. de Kerchove will coordinate the counterrorism work of the Council of the European Union, composed of representatives from all 27 EU Member States, maintaining an overview of all tools at the Union's disposal, closely monitoring the implementation of the EU counterterrorism strategy, and ensuring that the Union plays an active role in the fight against terrorism. In making the announcement, High Representative Solana noted that recent events have shown that Europe must never relax in preventing and fighting terrorism.
