The European Commission has welcomed the report from the UK National Audit Office on EU financial management (released on 11 June 2010).

Commissioner Semeta, responsible for Taxation, customs and audit, said: "The National Audit Office's report is a good example of a Member State taking its responsibilities seriously when it comes to checking how EU funds are managed at national level. In my view, the national audit institutions could contribute further to the common efforts to improve financial management of EU funds. I will be encouraging them to do so, in cooperation with the European Court of Auditors.  I do agree with the finding that complex rules can increase the risk of errors. That is why I support all initiatives which aim at reducing the complexity of rules and improving the cost-effectiveness of controls, without compromising the principle of sound financial management".

Commissioner Lewandowski, responsible for Budget, stated that "the proposed review of the EU financial regulation that I presented on 28 May does precisely call for a drastic cut in red tape for the rules governing the way EU funds are managed. Simpler and more efficient rules will give European small and medium enterprises, researchers and local and regional authorities easier access to EU funds; this in turn would boost recovery and promote growth at a time when most EU Member States face budgetary difficulties. The National Audit Office's report mirrors the Commission's view on this issue".
