Ophelia – G. Roland Biermann

2 - 11 October 2013

The concepts of disharmony and dissonance in the continuum of human existence are central themes in Ophelia, one of Biermann's latest projects.  In this series of works, Biermann takes a particular interest in exploring the contrapuntal relationship between beauty, death and transience, through a delicately crafted set of Warholian photographic representations of plastic carrier bags floating in a sea of used engine oil. Oil as a modern commodity, has been the source of enormous accumulation of wealth and is associated with the concepts of mobility and freedom. It is also the root-cause of continuous, political and economic conflicts and many, significant environmental disasters

    Ophelia – G. Roland Biermann

The use of oil and of its derivatives, in this case oil-based consumer products such as the plastic bags, becomes a metaphor for the cyclical and antagonistic nature of matter and thought, constantly in a state of flux and mutation. The resulting images are beautiful and intricate compositions of figurative forms and vivid colours, crystallized by the camera in the form of portraits of a rather dark and threatening future. Biermann's conceptual allegories are once again concerned with the relativity of matter, the temporality of context and the variety of narrative in the quest of uncovering the truth, and by the same token, make him an artist of hyper realistic affiliation.
