Entries sought for 2013 EU health prize for journalists

The European Commission has launched the 2013 EU prize for health journalists.  Held annually since 2009, the competition is designed to stimulate and recognise high-quality journalism which raises awareness about good health, healthcare and patients' rights issues.

Journalists are invited to submit articles published in print or online media in any EU member state between 1 August 2012 and 30 September 2013.  

    Entries sought for 2013 EU health prize for journalists

    Articles must relate to one of the following health topics:

    cross-border healthcare

    rare diseases

    health workforce

    patient safety and hospital acquired infections

    organ donation and transplantation

    chronic diseases: cancer, cardiovascular diseases and/or diabetes

    vaccination (flu vaccination and/or childhood vaccination)

    prudent use of antibiotics

    ageing and dementias


    active and healthy ageing

    health determinants: tobacco, alcohol and/or nutrition & physical activity.

    Deadline for entries 30 September 2013.

    One finalist from each EU member state will be chosen by national juries made up of journalists and public health experts under the chairmanship of the Commission. The 28 national finalists will then be judged by an EU jury who will select the overall EU winner and runners-up.


    Participants to the competition must be nationals or residents of one of the 28 EU Member States and aged 18 or over.

    A maximum of 2 articles can be submitted per participant and team submissions are accepted as long as the team does not exceed 5 people.

    All articles must be in one of the official languages of the EU and have been originally published in either a print or online media outlet between 1 August 2012 and 30 September 2013.

    The maximum length of the article should not exceed 20,000 characters (including spaces).
