Bessbrook pupil wins drawing competition to mark EU birthday
Congratulations to Tara McKeown (aged 9) from St Joseph’s Primary School, Bessbrook for designing the winning entry in a design competition to mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome which created the European Economic Community.
Over 500 entries were received from primary schools across Northern Ireland to the ‘design a postcard for Europe’ competition run by the British Council and the European Commission Office. Tara’s winning design highlighted the enlargement of the EU over the last fifty years from the six original countries to the current twenty seven countries. The winning design has been turned into a postcard for use across Northern Ireland.
Welcoming pupils and staff from the winning school and the other runners-up at a special reception at the EC Info Point in Belfast, Eddie McVeigh, Head of the European Commission Office said: “As the EU turns fifty this year, we thought we would challenge our young people to express their understanding ofEuropethrough colour and design. We have been very impressed with the enthusiasm shown and the quality of the entries and I would thank all the pupils, the schools and the parents for making the competition such a great success.”
