Safer baby walkers will reduce accidents

A European safety standard for baby walkers to help prevent many childhood accidents has been published this week. The EU standard introduces a requirement for stability tests during the manufacture of baby walkers and for the design to be geared towards reducing the risk of injuries. The standard will provide all economic operators and market surveillance authorities with a clear, quick and single reference for making, importing or checking baby walkers for safety. "This standard will help to keep the EU's youngest and most vulnerable citizens safe," the EU Consumer Commissioner Meglena Kuneva said. "Although parental or adult supervision is the ultimate protection for a child, extra safety precautions in the manufacture of children's products are also crucial." Member States backed the Commission's proposal to introduce this standard in November 2008 and the European Parliament has also welcomed the decision. Research from the UK's Child Accident Prevention Trust estimates that more children are injured by baby walkers than by any other nursery product. Click here for further information.

Dispute between Russia and Ukraine on gas transit

During his speech to the European Parliament marking the beginning of the new Presidency of the EU Council, President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, conveyed a very clear message to Russia and Ukraine over the continuing gas dispute: "If the agreement sponsored by the EU is not honoured as a matter of urgency, I will advise European companies to take this matter to the courts and call on Member States to engage in concerted action to find alternative ways of energy supply and transit. So we will see very soon whether this is a technical hitch or whether there is no political intention to honour the agreement. And, if I can just spell this out: if the agreement is not honoured, it means that Russia and Ukraine can no longer be considered reliable partners for the EU in matters of energy supply." President Barroso also said that the Commission, in any case, will come forward with further proposals to improve energy security in Europe. This follows the presentation in November of a Strategic Energy Review.

. eu domain passes the 3 million mark

Two and a half years after its launch, the third million .eu domain name has been registered, confirming the success of the .eu top-level internet domain.  Nowthe fourth most popular internet domain among European country domains and the ninth worldwide, it promotes a distinctly European online identity and helps citizens and businesses to reap the full benefits of the single market. "The three million .eu domains reflect the confidence of European internet users in .eu," said Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media. "This achievement, just a few months before its third anniversary, indicates how .eu has clearly won public favour: a growing number of internet users are embracing the opportunity to express their European character online. In particular, I am glad to see that an increasing number of small and medium-sized companies have adopted .eu as an integral part of their corporate identity and I am looking forward to seeing more companies taking advantage of .eu in the future."

Commission welcomes vote on Plant Protection Products Regulation

The European Parliament has adopted in second reading a Regulation to replace the current legislation on plant protection products. The new legislation will increase the protection of human health and the environment, will lead to a better protection of agricultural production and will extend and deepen the single market of plant protection products. European Commissioner for Health, Androulla Vassiliou said: "This is certainly a very good way for the European Parliament and the Council to start the New Year – by improving the protection of human health and of the environment. The new legislation will also benefit our farmers, as it ensures their own protection through specific measures such as the promotion of safer products." The new Regulation will facilitate innovation by establishing clear criteria for approval of substances. It has now to be formally adopted by the Council and will enter into force later this year.
