Neil Mitchison has been Head of the Commission's Office in Scotland since June 2006.

Mr Mitchison, 60, was brought up in Scotland, between Kintyre and Edinburgh. He went to school in Edinburgh and read mathematics at Cambridge.

After working in artificial intelligence and linguistics at Edinburgh and Sussex Universities, he worked for some years at the BBC, principally as a Gaelic radio and TV producer and presenter.

He joined the staff of the European Commission in 1985, initially as a computer consultant, analyst and system designer.

From 1988 to 2006, he worked at the Commission’s Research Centre in Ispra in Italy, running a variety of scientific and technical projects addressing risk analysis, and the safety and security of physical installations and computer systems.
