What can vehicle safety deliver in future?
Vehicle safety is identified as a key strategy by the EU towards addressing the EU-wide goal to reduce deaths by 50% by the year 2010.
Considerable room for further improvement has been identified. The European Commission has stated that if all cars were designed to provide crash protection equivalent to that of the best cars in the same class, half of all fatal and disabling injuries could be avoided European Commission, 2003. A range of future needs has been identified by European organisations: the International Research Council of the Biomechanics of Injury IRCOBI, the European Transport Safety Council and the European Enhanced Safety of Vehicles Committee EEVC Status Report 2005 and the Passive Safety Network Roadmap.
