Road transport provides vital functions for European society enabling economic growth, access to jobs and competitiveness. At the same time it is responsible for around one quarter of the EU's final energy consumption and about a fifth of its CO2 emissions. The decarbonisation of road transport is therefore an important issue.

The European Council in its conclusion of October 2014 invited the European Commission "to further examine instruments and measures for a comprehensive and technology neutral approach for the promotion of emissions reduction and energy efficiency in transport, for electric transportation and for renewable energy sources in transport also after 2020".

In view of this request, European Commissioners Arias Cañete, Bieńkowska and Bulc, respectively responsible for Climate and Energy, Industry and Transport, are holding a high-level conference on 18th June to discuss next EU level actions on road transport decarbonisation

Road transport is an important element of the Commission's White Paper on Transport and of the recently adopted Energy Union Communication. Action in the road transport field can reduce energy consumption through higher efficiency, improve energy security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution.

The morning will comprise three consecutive panel sessions which will address road transport decarbonisation in relation to energy and climate policy, the overall strategy for transport in view of the upcoming Road Package, and competitiveness. Each panel will last about an hour and will include one Commissioner, a Member State Minister, a European Parliament Committee chair, an industry representative and a civil society representative
