What do we want to achieve ?
- 1 in 20 jobs in the EU in the transport sector
- Only 22 % of transport wokers are women
- A third of all transport workers are over 50 years old
On 4 June 2015, Commissioner for transport Violeta Bulc and Commissioner for employment Marianne Thyssen organised a Conference on a social Agenda for transport to discuss the most pressing issues:
- How to make transport professions more attractive? How to adapt qualification and training needs to new technologies and to new types of jobs?
- What more can be done to improve employment and working conditions in the transport sector?
- What can be done to further strengthen the involvement of social partners in the EU transport policy?
On 19 April and 21 April 2016, two additional workshops took place which reflected on ways to attract more women to the transport sector. The first took place at the Transport Research Arena in Warsaw. The second , organised jointly by Commissioner Violeta Bulc and Commissioner Vera Jourova, in charge of gender equality, gathered women with concrete experience as transport workers, company representatives at the managerial level and human resources departments, social partners, representatives from training institutes, civil society, sociologists/psychologists, representatives from some Member States' transport administrations, and Members of the European Parliament and the Economic and Social Committee in Brussels. They jointly reflected on possible concrete actions. Following these events, a broader consultation will be launched.
At the Transport Research Arena, a second workshop took place on 20 April on how to match Academia and the job market . It focused on issues and actions for better educational and research opportunities in the transport field in Europe, in order to match the future professional needs in the job market.
