Research and Innovation

What will be funded?

The total budget for Transport (including Aeronautics) is € 4.1 billion. Most of the budget of each year is used to support research, technological development and demonstration projects resulting from the annual Calls for Proposals.

Emphasis of Directorate-General Mobility & Transport in FP7 will be on large-scale, integrated technical demonstration projects, on technologies at the end of the research/development stage and with a view to the market.

Under FP7 Directorate-General Mobility & Transport will develop two large industrial and infrastructural programmes, SESAR and Galileo, as well as « traditional » activities derived from the Transport White Paper and its mid-term review.

In the transport work programme, the areas that mainly will be managed by Directorate-General Mobility & Transport priorities are:

  • Air Traffic Management - SESAR   The Joint Undertaking SESAR (Council Regulation N° 219/2007, J.O.L64/2.3.2007 ) will realise a large industrial initiative, which aims at developing new technologies and means to manage the increase of air traffic in Europe in the future. SESAR will consolidate the efforts of the European industry, Eurocontrol and the European Community and is foreseen to manage the research activities which will focus on new systems and technologies for air traffic management, the integration and validation of projects etc.
  • GALILEO
The GNSS Supervisory Authority  (Règlement (CE) n° 1321/2004) will manage all GALILEO research activities. They will aim at the further modernisation of the system and the next generations of technologies and services, such as the development of services for transport and other sectors, the evolution of space and terrestrial components, the adaptation of receivers, etc.
  • Urban Transport   (including the continuation of the CIVITAS Initiative on clean urban transport strategies, innovative mobility concepts, high quality public transport systems).
  • Logistics and intermodal transport, rail and its interoperability, maritime transport (short sea shipping, motorways of the sea, inland waterways), traffic management including intelligent systems, aspects of airports which are not covered by SESAR
  • Instruments for the development and evaluation of policies.
