Blind spot mirrors for heavy goods vehicles

Every year, hundreds of road users, in particular cyclists and motorcyclists, lose their lives in accidents, because lorry drivers fail to notice them when taking a right turn.


The EU response to this problem is two-fold:

  1. New heavy duty vehicles of more than 3.5 tons are equipped with blind spot mirrors as of January 2007 under Directive 2003/97/EC.

  2. Existing heavy vehicles registered since January 2000 have to be retrofitted - not later than 31 March 2009 - with blind spot mirrors under Directive 2007/38/EC.

Member States are required, among others, to communicate a list of technical solutions complying with the requirements of the Directive. The following lists are available:
