A first analysis has been done on the CARE database aiming at exploring the possibilities of CARE data exploitation in a geographical information system (GIS). This first analysis led to the installation of a prototype "mapservice" presenting CARE data on a map and accessible by the client through a browser. This action will be continued in 2008 as there is a need from users for statistical maps on accidents at the level of a country, a region or sub-region level (NUTS codes levels). Two ways of exploiting spatial information from CARE database will be evaluated : a map library containing a collection of downloadable static maps (.pdf and .jpeg format) and a new html viewer application (map service) based on GIS Web technology. This web application will be integrated in the DG TREN GIS infrastructure. This will complement the reporting tools already used and better fulfil the objectives of road safety policy.
