The Commission has implemented a directive to make the fitting of mirrors and supplementary systems for indirect vision compulsory for specified vehicle types.

The principal objective is to reduce the number of “blind spot” accidents. This directive will only apply to new vehicles. The objective of the study is to assess, by means of cost-benefit analysis, the probable consequences of extending this legislation to cover existing vehicles.

The outcome of this study is that a retrofit of mirrors to cover the lateral blind spot to HGV is cost-beneficial (3.9 to 1)
