Blind spot mirrors

Blind spot mirrors provide drivers with a better view of what's alongisde them. With conventional mirrors, drivers can't always see people, bikes and cars right next to them, especially when turning.

Blind spot mirrorsEvery year, about 400 road users lose their lives in accidents because lorry drivers fail to notice them when taking a right turn (or a left turn in the UK, Ireland, Malta or Cyprus). To reduce the accident rate, EU law now requires both new and old heavy-duty vehicles to be fitted with blind spot mirrors.

Retrofitting

Retrofitting old trucks with blind spot mirrors could save up to 1 200 lives on European roads over the next 10 years. The average cost of a retrofit (between €100 and €150 per vehicle) is very small when set against the safety benefits. For some specific types of heavy vehicles, the cost is much higher – so the legislation allows for flexibility.
