A first analysis has been done on the CARE database aiming at exploring the possibilities of CARE data exploitation in a geographical information system (GIS). This first analysis led to the launch of a project called 'GIS support to CARE'. A first step of the project was the analysis of the user requirements and inventory of the available data and datasets. For the user requirements analysis part, a questionnaire regarding the use of maps with data from CARE database was sent to Project Officers of the European Commission and experts in the Member States. The results suggest that two kind of 'tools' could be of interest for the end users : a set of thematic maps (paper maps in PDF format) for the citizen and in interactive web GIS interface for the experts. The results of the questionnaire also permit to draw a list of predefined thematic maps on accidents and a web GIS interface with a set o tools.

These tools - a set of thematic maps as PDF files and a Web GIS interface - were part of the second phase of the 'GIS support to CARE' project.

These two new tools exploiting the power of map representation will complement the reporting tools already used and better fulfil the objectives of road safety policy.

The maps presented in the table above is the first result of the 'GIS support to CARE' project. It presents a set of thematic maps in PDF format representing accident variables for European countries for different years.
