Which rule are you interested in?

The use of seat belts and child restraint systems is MANDATORY (Directive 91/671/EEC as amended).

Seat belts are not compulsory for:

  • passengers with a specific medical certificate
  • delivery vehicles which do not drive faster than 25km/h
  • any vehicle which is driving at walking pace
  • staff and passengers in public transport (e.g. buses, coaches)
  • accompanying persons, in ambulances and cars for disabled people

Child restraint systems are not compulsory for children above the age of 14 and taller than 1.5 m

The amber light warns drivers they will have to stop when it turns red. The penalty for ignoring the red light is 200 CHF.

  1. Forbidden lanes are indicated by specific road signs.
  2. Bicycle routes are reserved for cyclists.
  3. Sidewalks are reserved for pedestrians.
  4. Bus lanes are reserved for buses (public transport).
  5. Red light in the shape of a cross means that the lane may not be used.

Respective penalties:

  • driving with a vehicle on a sidewalk (100 CHF)
  • driving with a vehicle on a bus lane (60 CHF)
  • driving with a vehicle on a cycle lane (80 CHF)
  • violating a red light (200 CHF)
