EC Conference on cargo securing and roadside technical checks
Saarbrücken, 6-7 October 2009
The first EC conference on cargo securing and technical roadside checks took
place on October 6th and 7th in Saarbrucken. The conference consisted of three
Session one, a roadside check focusing on the themes of the conference, took place at the French-German border and gave participants a first-hand experience of the challenges facing the enforcement officers.
During the second and third session, on cargo securing and technical roadside checks respectively, experts in the field gave presentations and informed participants about best practices and challenges for enforcement staff. Afterwards participants were divided into groups and asked to discuss several topics such as: are existing standards sufficient, what can be done to improve the existing situation, etc.
When the groups delivered their conclusions it became clear that overall standards are sufficient, but also that they are only understandable to experts. Moreover it was concluded that Europe should strive for further harmonisation of checklists and the training of enforcement staff.
The conference was reviewed positively by the participants and the hope was expressed that a second conference could be organised in the course of 2010.
