Road safety: New smartphone app provides information on EU road traffic rules

What is the speed limit on Spanish motorways? Do I need to wear a helmet when I cycle in Sweden? From now on, holiday makers do not need to spend a lot of time searching for this information. They can have it at hand wherever they are with the European Commission's new smartphone app "Going Abroad". The app is available for iPhone and iPad, Google Android and Microsoft Windows phones in 22 languages.

Speech on the European Railway Agency's 10th anniversary: on track into the future after 10 successful years

"From its origins 10 years ago, ERA has fulfilled its core task of working to build a more efficient, interoperable, and safer European railway system: one that is competitive with other forms of transport. It has been possible thanks to the people of this Agency, their dedication and expertise: vital qualities for preparing and revising technical specifications on interoperability, and on common safety methods, targets and indicators."

We were asked about...

Question asked by Catherine Bearder (ALDE)

Subject: Child car seat safety
One of my constituents found the experience of hiring a car seat for a child in Spain and Portugal both unsafe and unsatisfactory. The constituent was unsure who to contact. EU rules state that seat belts must be used in all motorised vehicles, with children over 1.35 metres using an adult seat belt and those under 1.35 metres using appropriate equipment for their size and weight.

Can the Commission confirm how well EU Directive 91/671/EEC is being implemented by the Member States?

Can the Commission also confirm whether it is aware that standards may differ between private cars and those on the rental market?

Corrigendum: The correct answer to last week's Parliamentary Question on "Ecopatente" can be found here: We apologize for the inconvenience.
