Demand for road freight transport and transport performance in tonne/kilometres is closely linked to GDP. The cyclical variation of the economy tends to have a larger impact on the sector due to its structural dependency to fluctuations in trade volumes. For instance, the downturn in the road transport sector was substantially greater than the average downturn in the economy during the 2008 and 2009 recession.
The Commission monitors and studies developments in the European road haulage market to obtain a factual, objective and reliable assessment in order to understand its dynamics and take accurate policy decisions.
