Co-operation with EUROCONTROL

The European Commission is working closely together with the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL) to achieve the objectives of the Single European Sky Initiative. The development of the Single European Sky implementing rules will thus benefit from the technical expertise of EUROCONTROL.

Widespread co-operation is important to ensure that the rules and strategies of both organisations are consistent, and to avoid duplication of efforts. It will also be extended to other areas like Galileo, research and development, support to states and co-ordinated actions in international organisations.

The European Community will become a member of EUROCONTROL. Currently the Community membership is being implemented on a provisional basis to enable Community participation during the ratification process. The full membership will be realised when all the EUROCONTROL member states have ratified the protocol on the accession of the European Community to the EUROCONTROL convention.

Furthermore the European Commission and EUROCONTROL have signed a Memorandum of Co-operation on the 22nd of December 2003 that governs the relationship between the two organisations and point the way for future co-operation.
