2009 was a record year, both in terms of applications submitted and the value of grants awarded.
The 2009 call attracted 70 applications, representing a total modal shift of 54.4 billion tonne-kilometres from the road to greener modes. The amount of grants requested amounted to €224.1 million. The 2009 budget for Marco Polo grants of €66.34 million was fully allocated. Two thirds of applications concerned direct modal shift actions
