Promotion of inland waterway transportCommission boosts inland waterway transport through a new platform – PLATINAOn 1 October 2008, the European Commission launched "PLATINA" to implement more efficiently actions and measures promoting inland waterway transport. The project, which is bringing together 22 partners from 9 European countries, is funded with € 8.5 million from the Commission. PLATINA has been designed as a platform for assisting the implementation of the European inland navigation programme NAIADES. First progress report on the 'NAIADES' Action ProgrammeOn 5 December 2007, the European Commission presented the first report on the progress that has been made in implementing the so-called 'NAIADES' programme which is aimed at promoting inland waterway transport in Europe. This first report registers progress in a broad range of areas, including initiatives that have been launched to improve market conditions, to modernise the fleet, to make the profession more attractive, and to improve waterway infrastructure.
NAIADES Action Programme: Communication on the promotion of inland waterway transportOn 17 January 2006, the European
Commission adopted a Communication on the promotion of inland
waterway transport. The “NAIADES” Action Programme is intended for
the period 2006–2013 and focuses on five strategic areas for a
comprehensive Inland Waterway Transport (IWT) policy: Market, Fleet,
Jobs and skills, Image, Infrastructure. The measures are rounded off
by reflections on an appropriate organisational structure.
Consultation: An Action programme for Inland Waterway TransportThe European Commission intends to
present a Communication on the promotion of Inland Waterway
Transport by the end of 2005. The Communication will set out an
integrated action programme, focusing on concrete actions which are
needed to fully exploit the market potential of inland navigation
and to make its use more attractive.
WorkshopProspects of inland navigation within the enlarged Europe, Brussels, 24 & 25 February 2005 On 24-25 February 2005, the European Commission organised a workshop at which the main recommendations of the PINE study were discussed. Member States, professional organisations representing the Inland Waterway transport sector and other interested parties actively participated in the discussions which focused on five subject areas: (1) Market requirements; (2) Fleet; (3) Human resources; (4) Image and promotion and (5) Infrastructure.
