The statistical data contained in this website provide an overview of road accident fatalities in the Member States for the period 1991 - 2003, on the basis of data available in the CARE database.

The data are normally available as of 1991. However, data for the following countries and corresponding years were not yet available in the CARE database at the date of drafting these statistical Tables:

The reader should be aware of the following:

  • Some data shown in the statistical tables come from the national statistical publications.

  • The data are compatible and use common definitions. Corrective factors have been applied to comply with the international definition of "person killed within 30 days".
    Minor differences in totals are due to the rounding of numbers.

  • Analysis and comparisons of accident data should take into account the absence of socioeconomic data such as traffic data.

  • Partial or complete reproduction of these statistics is permitted if the source is mentioned and accompanied with the present remarks.

  • These statistical Tables are a first outcome of the CARE database combining a limited number of variables. The Commission services intend to add more combinations in order to maximise their usefulness for external users.
