The association USPI aims at improving asset engineering information management for plants and products over the life cycle of those plants and products and accross the plant supply chain. It does so in particular through use of international standards.
The association is non-profit and has about 35 members of plant owners in oil, gas, proces & power, (EPC) contractors, equipment suppliers to various industries, consultancies, software suppliers, universities and training institutes.
The association exists formally 15 years and informally about 19 years.
The associaiton is led by an executive committee and a member management board.
There is also a foundation with the same aim with subscription to the chamber of commerce so that finance can be handled.

The Vision of USPI
“Companies in the process industries shall be able to share and/or exchange electronically the information needed to design, build, operate and maintain process and power plants using internationally accepted standards”.
This vision fits with the Next Generation Scenario that was developed for the Oil, Gas, Process & Power industry plant supply chain. It was formally published in February 2003.
The mission of USPI:
“To develop, maintain and promote the use of international information standards and best practices for product and plant life cycle information”
With the aims:
- To achieve quality engineering information required in the delivery of products and installations that are safe, reliable and environmentally friendly.
- To achieve shorter project delivery time, lower costs and support innovation.

The number of persons engaged in activities falling under the scope of the register includes:
- one person as permanent staff of USPI.

Working towards cooperation and achieving common industry goals.
This is undertaken by communicating with other associations and industry groups in the various countries.
In effect, UPSI drives the DIG a collaboration of global industry groups seeking interoperability in polkant and product information mgt.
Under CEN the ORCHID CWA has been developed laying out a rodamap for process industry enabling to asses where companies are in the overall process.
Communication with the policy makers of EU ICT policy FP7, communication with NEN, CEN and ISO and IEC Technical Committees.
