As the original proponent of Local Agenda 21 to the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio 1992, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability - is today the leading inter-municipal clearinghouse on local sustainable development (www.iclei.org). With more than 900 member cities World-wide, ICLEI is comprehensively involved in promoting and implementing sustainable development at the local level. On behalf of all major local government associations World-wide, ICLEI co-ordinated the local authorities' contribution to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg 2002, launching 'Local Action 21' as the motto, mandate and movement for an accelerated implementation of Local Agenda 21 in the decade after Johannesburg. ICLEI is also acting as the local government focal point for the UNFCC, and UNCBD. As an association of local governments, ICLEI is responsible for assisting local authorities that are committed to implementing local sustainable development. In Europe, ICLEI’s thematic programmes on urban governance, sustainability management, sustainable procurement and climate protection have developed numerous projects in cooperation with European cities and research institutions since 1992 (www.iclei.org/europe). This constitutes an excellent source of information on work being implemented at local level in a wide range of thematic areas relating to sustainable development. Through its projects ICLEI is actively encouraging and supporting City to City cooperation within Europe and between Europe and other continents and has established solid structures for that purpose. As an agency ICLEI is directly supporting local governments in developing environmental management systems, participatory sustainable urban planning including land-use planning, waste management, energy management, water management as well as improvements in local transport and sustainable urban mobility. Together with member Cities ICLEI has developed advanced approaches and methodologies. Within its International Training Centre ICLEI has concentrated the know-how for international multidisciplinary training and capacity building including distance training. ICLEI’s extensive experience in case study research and administration of case study research is evidenced by successful products including the World-wide ICLEI Case Study series. As founding member of the European Sustainable Cities and Towns Campaign, ICLEI has been heavily involved in developing the criteria for the European Sustainable Cities and Towns Award and drafting the Aalborg Charta and Aalborg Commitments.
