The IVAA (International Federation of Anthroposophic Medical Associations) represents and coordinates the national anthroposophic doctors' associations on both the European and international levels in regard to political and legal affairs.
As a corporate body the IVAA functions as the umbrella organization for the national anthroposophic doctors' associations worldwide in regard to political and legal concerns.
In the representation of anthroposophic medicine worldwide the IVAA is part of the Medical Section of the School of Spiritual Science at the Goetheanum.
The IVAA is registered as association according to Swiss law with yearly member assemblies and democratically elected council and president. The IVAA functions as nonprofit NGO and is financed by member fees, grants and project-related donations.
Mission: The areas of work of the IVAA include:
Safeguarding the legal status of anthroposophic medicine as an integrative medical system
Safeguarding the availabitity of Anthroposophic Medicinal Products (AMPs) on the market necessary for the anthroposophic medical approach
Safeguarding the accessibility of other anthroposophic treatments, including art therapies, eurythmy therapy and many other treatments which belong to the anthroposophic medical system
Safeguarding pluralism in medicine with regard to:
the rights of patients to use the treatment of their choice
the rights of doctors to offer the best available treatment for their patients
Educational and post-graduate training issues are not primary issues for the IVAA, nor is the IVAA involved in the coordination of research projects. However, the IVAA may become involved if medical/legal affairs or political discussion are affected by these activities.
In working for pluralism in medicine the IVAA is in close cooperation with other organisations that are engaged in this issue.
Currently IVAA and EUROCAM are in contact with MEPs to re-establish a CAM Interest Group in the European Parliament for the contribution of CAM to public health
IVAA has started the dialogue with the new European Commission in December 2014 and will present and discuss the system of Anthroposophic medicine with DG SANCO in the first half year of 2015.
IVAA/EUROCAM published a report on CAM and its role to prevent antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in 2014.
In 2012 IVAA contributed to the Conference on Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the European Parliament, 09.10.2012. IVAA was also in the advisory board of the CAMbrella research Project, which was finalized by a Conference at Brussels on 30.11.2012.
The IVAA activities in general include:
- Representation at the European/ international level including the necessary interaction with the representatives of the political institutions and administrative authorities at the EU level
- Pro-active participation in the development of the medical- and health systems especially at the European level
- Handling of medical, educational, training and research issues in regard to health and medicines
- Cooperation with other doctors' and health-organizations
- Safeguarding the legal status of Anthroposophic Medicine
- Coordination of the national doctors associations
Anthroposophic Medicine is practised in hospitals, clinics and other in-patients' facilities. Besides by general practitioners Anthroposophic Medicine is provided in 24 hospitals across Europe, mainly in Germany and Switzerland, also in Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and in the UK. Of those, 14 hospitals located in Germany and Switzerland provide Accident & Emergency services.
Several clinics have recently been classified as “Baby-Friendly Hospital” and the Havelhöhe/Berlin Clinic in
Germany was recently been classified by patients as one of the best clinics in Germany.
Anthroposophic Medicine is integrated into general and specialized public healthcare in Austria, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.
Moreover, Anthroposophic Medicine is taught at universities in Austria, Germany, Holland, Italy, Latvia, Spain, and Switzerland. University professorial chairs for AM are established at universities in Germany (Witten-Herdecke and Alfter), and within the context of CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) in Switzerland (Bern).
It is the intention of IVAA to draw on these experiences and to use them to improve the health not only of individual beings but for the betterment of health in our societies at the national as well as at the European level. Since several years IVAA started a pro-active commitment in the EU health policy, contributing so far mainly to Commissions consultations. But IVAA is of the opinion that time has come that Anthroposophic Medicine should be considered in the EU Health Action Programme, preferably together with the other European CAM doctors' organizations.

The society’s objective is:
to represent anthroposophic medical associations at international and European level,
to provide mutual help and support in securing legal safeguards for anthroposophic medicine,
to coordinate activities of international importance for anthroposophic medical associations.
Organs of the IVAA are:
the Members’ Assembly (MA),
Members of the society (IVAA) are anthroposophic medical associations and federations whose aim is to support and practise anthroposophically extended medicine.
Every association is represented by two delegates. One additional delegate with voting power is allowed per hundred full members of an association.
Every member of an association can be present at the Members’ Assembly and has the right to express his opinion, but only a delegate can cast a vote.
Delegates are elected by each association according to their own criteria.
The Members’ Assembly (MA).
One MA takes place at least once a year. A written invitation is sent to members at least two months in advance of the assembly. All doctors of member associations should be invited to the MA. An extraordinary assembly can be called by at least 5 members or the Council.
At the MA every delegate has one vote. Insofar as no other provision is made in the constitution, the MA takes decisions and undertakes its elections on the basis of an absolute majority of the votes cast.
The delegates’ powers are as follows:
Approval of the annual accounts and annual reports.
Determining the annual contributions of member associations.
Admitting new member associations.
Excluding a member association.
Election of the Council.
Election of the chairperson.
Election of auditors.
Decision to dismiss the Council as under Article 890-OR (in line with application of Article 891-OR) .
Decision to review the constitution.
Formulating tasks and aims that are binding on the Council.
Decision to dissolve the society.
The Council. The Council consists of three to seven persons, and no majority of members from any one country is allowed. The delegates elect the Council for a period of three years. The delegates likewise elect the chairman of the Council for a period of three years. Council members are eligible for re-election thereafter
