In order to achieve its goals, the Association aims in particular at institutional activities such as:
a. arousing the greatest possible interest and promoting actions for the protection, preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage, of environment, of urban, rural and natural landscape, of monuments, of historical centres and of the quality of life;
b. encouraging protection law enforcement, and promoting the intervention by the public administration in order to prevent the damaging of the Italian historical, artistic and environmental heritage and to ensure its correct use and proper fruition;
c. encouraging the adjustment of the existing legislation to the fundamental principle contained in the Art, nr. 9 of the Italian Constitution, as well as to the international conventions referring to topics on the protection of the natural, historical and artistic heritage, and in particular to the directives of the European Union;
d. collaborating with the activities and the initiatives that have the same purposes in common;
e. urging into acting all that is necessary, including through tax breaks and credits incentives special terms, in order to make things easier for the maintenance of the cultural and environmental heritage and its public enjoyment;
f. urging, also through tax breaks, donations to the State of collections and property of historical, artistic and natural heritage, in order to grant its better enhancement;
g. promoting the acquisition by Italia Nostra of buildings or properties in general that contain historical, artistic, natural and environmental value, or otherwise ensuring their protection and eventually also its management according to the needs of the public interest;
h. promoting the knowledge and the enhancement of historical, artistic and natural heritage of our country through appropriate environmental education initiatives in schools, training and professional development of the teachers, as well as through training and continued education of the society as a whole;
i. promoting appropriate participation forms of the citizens and young people, in particular at the protection and enhancement of the cultural heritage of their territory;
l. performing and promoting publishing activities relating to the activities and the aims of the Association;
m. promoting the cultural education if its members, also through travelling, visits, courses and specific study fields;
n. promoting the establishment of associations federations, or otherwise the participation at the associations federations that have similar purposes, even if only partially, establishment of consortia and committees including associations or affiliations with twinning actions, whereas keeping its autonomy;
o. Generally speaking, taking any other action that may be useful for the achievement of social goals.

the 12,000 members who work for the purposes of the NGOs are spread throughout the Italian territory (211 sections that are managed by 20 regional councils).
Italia Nostra is mainly engaged with the defense of the italian cultural landscape heritage and environment.
It also manages directly a natural oasis in Sicily (Oasis Imera) and a park on the outskirts of the city of Milan (Bosco in città) for which the ONG received numerous national and international awards.

Italia Nostra does its best so that the initiatives of the Council of Europe concerning the protection of cultural heritage and landscape, such as the European Landscape Convention, signed in Florence in 2000 by almost all European countries, the Convention of Faro entered into force since June 1, 2011, etc., are applied in Italy.
The "Convenzione delle Alpi", which also joined the European Union, is supported by Italia Nostra.
