VSO is the world’s leading independent, international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in 37 fragile and less developed countries in the world. Our high-impact approach involves bringing people together to share skills, build capacities, promote international understanding and action and change lives to make the world a fairer place. We have improved the capacity of hundreds of NGO partners, and thousands of government staff in health, livelihoods, education and disability work. VSO has promoted pro poor policies and improved practices through partnership with local communities, local NGOs and government agencies where we work.

VSO’s unique way of working,”Volunteering for Development”, brings about positive and sustainable change that extends beyond outcomes possible with money alone. Our new strategic plan, People First was published in 2010 and identifies six strategic directions. The first, putting people at the centre of development, captures the essence of VSO, bringing together those in VSO’s partner organisations and in the communities they represent with skilled and experienced international and/or national volunteers who are experts in their area of work. Locally owned solutions to development challenges are achieved by working in partnership, sharing learning and transferring technical expertise, brokering knowledge and building networks.
Two key elements of change drive VSO’s work:
1) Supporting NGOs and governments to provide relevant and inclusive services
2) Strengthening civil society through capacity-building and network / coalition-building so communities can hold governments to account, ensuring they develop and implement pro-poor policies.
Over the years, VSO has concentrated our work across six thematic areas, based on the priorities of our partners and needs of the communities in which we work. As a result, we’ve developed specialist knowledge and learning in education, health, HIV and AIDS, disability, participation and governance and secure livelihoods.
In 2010/ 11, over 2,600 international volunteers contributed to VSO’s work, 29 per cent of them from developing countries. We worked with over 300 national volunteering partners to support and promote local volunteering initiatives, helping strengthen the work of over 250,000 local volunteers. In addition, over 280 young people took part in our Global Xchange youth initiative, working in communities in the UK and across the world to share knowledge, contribute to international development and become active citizens in their communities. We supported 266 Diaspora volunteers to contribute to development in their countries of origin, and built the capacity of 45 Diaspora organisations across the UK.
Through its programme work, VSO has improved the lives of 26 million of the most disadvantaged and marginalised people worldwide.
